Everyone in healthcare is talking about artificial intelligence, and most healthcare organizations are doing something with it, even in pilots or small use cases. But some hospitals and health systems are really leading the pack.
WHY DOES IT TAKE FOREVER
CB Insights this week launched its Hospital AI Readiness Index. The scorecard is viewed as a data set that tracks how well healthcare systems are doing with their AI projects — and how well they’re doing. putting them to work for clinical and surgical processes and outcomes.
The index uses CB Insights data to rate hospitals on two factors: innovation and execution.
For the former, the authors examined what they do to develop or acquire new AI and automation tools and whether they have a dedicated AI research unit. For the latter, they looked at AI deployments – where they are and what kind of success they have in the world.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, three powerful health systems top the list. The Mayo Clinic ranks high, according to CB Insights, followed by Intermountain and Cleveland Clinic.
For example, Mayo has been cited for filing more than 50 patents for AI-enabled devices in cardiology, oncology and elsewhere, and for investing in case-focused AI startups. for clinical and surgical use.
Intermountain and Cleveland Clinic, meanwhile, have been recognized for their domestic development of automated clinical decision support systems, and many productive AI-centric business relationships, such as "co- partner with PathAI focused on using pathology algorithms to improve translational research and clinical care."
Here’s the full list of 25 health systems, according to CB Insights (note the link in #17), linking to some of our coverage of AI work.

A recent collection page features articles showing how blue-chip provider organizations are pioneering AI efforts, and success stories where IT investments and innovation are yielding clinical and clinical ROI. ball.
Included in an interview with Mayo Clinic Platform President Dr. John Halamka on the possibility of reproductive AI; Cleveland Clinic Chief Analytics Officer Albert Marinez, who offered advice on the democratization of AI innovation and talent optimization; and Craig Richardville, Chief Digital and Information Officer, Intermountain, with advice on vendor evaluation and selection.
ON THE RECORD
"We looked at the top private sector health systems in the US (by number of hospitals) and ranked them according to their readiness to adapt to the rapidly evolving world of AI along two main pillars: innovation and execution," said CB Insights researchers. in announcing the new AI Hospital Readiness Index.
"The innovation score measures a health system’s track record in developing or acquiring new AI capabilities," they explained. "This number is based on CB Insights data including patents, acquisitions, and contracting activities. It also takes into account the presence of research centers dedicated to AI."
Meanwhile, the execution score "measures the health system’s ability to bring the products and services offered by AI to clinical applications as well as to embed AI internally in business operations and beyond. information, and the interpretation of money."
